Vibraphonist, Composer, Educator
Dimitris Angelakis is one of the most accomplished Greek jazz musicians of his generation and a genuine representative of jazz. He has worked with some of the best musicians of the International Jazz Scene as a band leader, a sideman and as a guest soloist at various projects.
Following his father’s passion for jazz music, Greek born vibraphonist Dimitris Angelakis knew exactly what career path to follow even from a very early age. Learning straight from records and later on moving to Philadelphia as a Fulbright Scholar, Dimitris never stopped developing his own sound and he quickly emerged him self as one of the most accomplished jazz musicians of his generation. His high energy performances along with his soulful compositions makes him an on demand performer at various festivals around the world (“Project Metamorphosis”, “41st International Music Festival”, “World Percussion Festival”, Big Day Bach”, “ISME”) having performed with classical and jazz ensembles and steel drum orchestras (Delaware Steel) from the US and Europe, sharing his talent with Paris Strother (Prince), George Kontrafouris (Timo Lassy), Takis Paterelis (Jimmy Cob) and recorded several albums featuring musicians from Greece, UK, Spain and Germany.
In 2013 Dimitris’s need to push his own boundaries led him to Philadelphia (University of the Arts), as a Fulbright Scholar, to study with his mentors Tony Miceli and Christos Rafalides where he was selected to record an album featuring his own compositions alongside with Uarts students. Upon receiving his Master’s Degree Dimitris began to immerse himself as a vibraphonist in the international music scene recording 3 albums in Europe the same year with appearances in Spain and Ukraine, working with Giannis Pavlidis (Dave Leibman), Gianis Papatriantafyllou (Ralph Peterson), Antonis Andreou (Pink Martini) and performing as an opening act for various acclaimed US artists such as Eve Cornelious. In 2018 Dimitris moved to China for a year following his passion on teaching and performing music alongside with Chinese and international musicians, shaping his musical personality even further. Leaving China, Dimitris found himself recording new albums, and establishing himself even more by collaborating with musicians from Greece, Bulgaria, UK and US (Native Speakers, Composer’s Series, Petros Klampanis, Dimos Dimitriadis) and recording new albums to be released in 2021 with George Fakanas group feat. Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez) and Israel Arranz (duet recording).
